Small Biz Saturday

Shop Small.

In the spirit of shopping small and shopping local - since this is the primary goal of Small Business Saturday - we’ve put together a shortlist of small business we truly appreciate within the Philadelphia area. Whether offering vintage finds or fresh home goods - each of our six favorites is worth a visit, especially with the holiday season around the corner.

The brick and mortar version of YOWIE opened this summer, and it’s everything we can hope for in a tidy, well-appointed space. One-off and custom items from some of the best makers Philly has to offer (Jessica Hans, Brian Giniewski) and from beyond (DusenDusen, Clay Hickson) are available alongside curated gifts for anyone in the family, or yourself. Philadelphia is very lucky to have YOWIE.

Rennes crafts their namesake label in a studio behind the check-out desk. Carrying an impeccably curated group of home goods and clothes from Casey Casey to BDDW ceramics, the space remains surprisingly minimalist and always relaxing.

Go here for: Handmade clothing that bucks trend in favor of classic cuts and brilliant color.

Minima’s new showroom is expansive. They recently started using the hashtag #Phillydesigndistrict, and they mean it: with two design showrooms on North 3rd street in Old City - they’re a verified powerhouse.

Go here for: thoroughly considered furniture and accessories whose style and materials will last a lifetime.

Offering some of the best scents in the world (alongside great knits and playful ceramics), Vestige is the place to go for candles and perfumes. While you’re at it - visit Shop Field down the street for a plant or two.

Go here for: A range of objects that feel so "right", you won’t want to put ‘em down.

Get these perfect kouign-amanns boxed up like the ultimate present they are. The owner and her husband wake up in the early hours of the morning to prepare their vast selection of decadent pastries, then brings them straight to you and your eager stomach around 8:00AM. Don’t miss this delicate treat.

Go here for: Better Kouign-Amanns, Croissants, and Scones than you’ll get at Dominique Ansel (although they’re pretty damn good, too).

The best vintage shop in Philadelphia (and really Los Angeles, New York, etc. for that matter) is curated by Jeremy Olsen and is connected by a back hallway to another local favorite, Moon + Arrow. Sometimes (pretty often) we find things in RareCo that if seen on the street might be passed up, yet become lust-worthy in this great space. No matter the day, no matter the season, objects from every walk of life find their way into their perfectly planned vignettes.

Go here for: Rare and meticulous art, home decor, furniture, and clothing that we can’t find elsewhere.
